material loss, but you can help prevent a tragic loss.
- If you are
moving into a new home, replace all the locks.
- Install
deadlocks on all your outside doors and double cylinder locks if the
outside door has glass panels adjacent.
- Ensure door
hinges are installed on the inside and make sure all mouldings fit
tightly.
- Install
deadlocks on all windows.
- Install a
monitored electronic security system.
- Keep outside
doors locked at all times.
- Keep the
garage and tool shed locked at all times.
- Install a
nightlight at all outside entrances.
- Remove shrubs
and trees next to your house that can conceal a burglar breaking in.
- Identify who
is at the door before allowing entrance into your home.
- If a stranger
requests to use your phone, don't let them in. You make the call for
them.
- Avoid
revealing your address and phone number to strangers.
- Don't leave
notes for delivery men on doors.
- Stop all
newspapers and mail deliveries during extended absences and have
neighbours periodically check your home, and remove junk mail.
- Do not have
any identification tags on your keys.
- Separate the
keys of your house and car when leaving your car in a parking lot.
- Large amounts
of money and other such valuables should not be left at home.
- Engrave your
drivers licence number on all valuable property.
- Photograph and
keep a written record of all valuables with serial numbers.
- Newspaper
announcements or weddings, travel plans and funerals can tell an
intruder where you live and when the home is vacant.
- Do not enter
your house if you see traces of forced entry.
- Should an
intruder be detected, do not confront them.

Fire Protection
Remember, you and
your family's future depends on being prepared. By following and
establishing a simple set of rules in your household, you may have a
material loss, but you can help prevent a tragic loss.
- Don't give
fire a place to start.
- After a party,
check for lit cigarettes, appliances, hotplates, candles, etc.
- Establish two
escape routes from each room of the house.
- Mark escape
windows for infants and elderly.
- Establish
regular fire drills. The more you rehearse the less panic-stricken a
child will be in a real emergency.
- Establish a
designated meeting place outside your home.
- Establish a
simple fire alarm signal to be used by your family.
- Install a
monitored fire alarm to provide early fire warning.
- Close all
bedroom and hall doors during sleeping hours.
- Make sure all
escape windows and doors open easily.
- Place rope or
ladder in a convenient location to be used for escape from a second
floor.
- In case of
fire, don't waste time in getting possessions and valuables - JUST GET
OUT!
- Instruct
children how to test doors for heat and smoke before opening them.
- Carefully open
doors and be in a position to close them immediately.
- Crouch close to
the floor to avoid deadly gases.
- Above all -
STAY CALM and DON'T PANIC.
