  1. If you are moving into a new home, replace all the locks.
  2. Install deadlocks on all your outside doors and double cylinder locks if the outside door has glass panels adjacent.
  3. Ensure door hinges are installed on the inside and make sure all mouldings fit tightly.
  4. Install deadlocks on all windows.
  5. Install a monitored electronic security system.
  6. Keep outside doors locked at all times.
  7. Keep the garage and tool shed locked at all times.
  8. Install a nightlight at all outside entrances.
  9. Remove shrubs and trees next to your house that can conceal a burglar breaking in.
  10. Identify who is at the door before allowing entrance into your home.
  11. If a stranger requests to use your phone, don't let them in. You make the call for them.
  12. Avoid revealing your address and phone number to strangers.
  13. Don't leave notes for delivery men on doors.
  14. Stop all newspapers and mail deliveries during extended absences and have neighbours periodically check your home, and remove junk mail.
  15. Do not have any identification tags on your keys.
  16. Separate the keys of your house and car when leaving your car in a parking lot.
  17. Large amounts of money and other such valuables should not be left at home.
  18. Engrave your drivers licence number on all valuable property.
  19. Photograph and keep a written record of all valuables with serial numbers.
  20. Newspaper announcements or weddings, travel plans and funerals can tell an intruder where you live and when the home is vacant.
  21. Do not enter your house if you see traces of forced entry.
  22. Should an intruder be detected, do not confront them.

>> Fire Protection

Remember, you and your family's future depends on being prepared. By following and establishing a simple set of rules in your household, you may have a material loss, but you can help prevent a tragic loss.

    1. Don't give fire a place to start.
    2. After a party, check for lit cigarettes, appliances, hotplates, candles, etc.
    3. Establish two escape routes from each room of the house.
    4. Mark escape windows for infants and elderly.
    5. Establish regular fire drills. The more you rehearse the less panic-stricken a child will be in a real emergency.
    6. Establish a designated meeting place outside your home.
    7. Establish a simple fire alarm signal to be used by your family.
    8. Install a monitored fire alarm to provide early fire warning.
    9. Close all bedroom and hall doors during sleeping hours.
    10. Make sure all escape windows and doors open easily.
    11. Place rope or ladder in a convenient location to be used for escape from a second floor.
    12. In case of fire, don't waste time in getting possessions and valuables - JUST GET OUT!
    13. Instruct children how to test doors for heat and smoke before opening them.
    14. Carefully open doors and be in a position to close them immediately.
    15. Crouch close to the floor to avoid deadly gases.
    16. Above all - STAY CALM and DON'T PANIC.
